Community Conservation Celebration Nov 2023Govan Wilson Road

Govan Wilson Road - Nov 2023

We recently hosted our annual Govan Wilson Road thank-you afternoon tea. With the Tamahunga kiwi and their two new chicks nearby, this community of trappers has an extra reason to stay motivated.

The continued dedication of this group of neighbours is paying off with the appearance of korimako/bellbirds in the last year as well as confirmation of pekepeka/long-tailed bats in three locations, and a possible Pōpokatea/whitehead sighting this week.

The Forest Bridge Trust recently distributed three more bat recorders; these will be monitoring various locations along the road for a month before being handed on to other residents on the waiting list.

The afternoon tea social provided a great opportunity for trappers to catch up and exchange stories. Charlie, our Trap NZ App guru, was on hand to answer everyone’s Trap NZ questions. Meanwhile, our predator control experts were popular, demonstrating the automatic AT220 traps and teaching new participants about the Doc traps and Flipping Timmys.

Lynley from Rata Bush expressed gratitude for the dedication in maintaining two significant traplines covering 168 hectares at the end of GWR. We were thrilled that new volunteers were eager to join.

All in all, it was a fabulous afternoon. A special mention to Hamish, our Trapper/Chef, for providing the beautiful food once again.
